Today on the blog I’m going to share with you some of my nail painting hints and tips, most I’ve pick up from reading magazines and blogs but some worked for me and some didn’t so I’m sharing what works for me!

Painting:

  • Apply your base coat but don’t wait for it to be 100% dry, what works for me is to apply first on my right hand little finger and then working my way to the left, by the time I painted my left hand’s little finger the base coat is just right for the first coat of nail polish.
  • Apply thin coats, these dry faster and holds better on your nails, two coats of polish works best but if the polish is very sheer you can apply a third layer. I use the same method I described above going from right to left – oh and I’m left-handed so you can do it from which ever side feels natural to you.
  • Lastly apply your top coat, wait as long as possible to do this step especially if you did a nail art design, if the polish isn’t 100% dry your top coat might smudge and smear your design. Don’t forget to paint the edge of your nail to lock in your fresh mani.
  • Don’t paint your nails after you washed your hands, your nails absorb water and your nail polish will chip and peel faster.

Nail Art:

  • You don’t need nail dotting tools to do great designs, even tho they do come in handy because they come in different sizes, a bent open bobby pin works just as great.

Cleaning Up:

  • Invest in a nail polish corrector pen, essence has one that works great and it’s affordable you can read my review on it here, always let your nails dry completely, top coat included before fixing mistakes, this will help protect your polish if you slip onto your nail.
  • If you don’t have a pen you can use q-tips dipped in polish remover to clean up, but I prefer not to do this to close to my nail, I always end up messing things up.
  • If you don’t have a pen nor like the q-tip method you can do your mani before bath time and then use this as an excuse to take an extra long bath. Soaking in hot water will loosen the polish on your skin and cuticle and it will rub off easily.

Dipping in fuzz, glitters and feathers:

  • If you want to dip your nails for an effect paint one coat of polish, and then on the second coat while it’s still really wet just dip, the wetter your polish the more glitter, fuzz or feathers will stick to your nails. If you like the texture you can skip the top coat.

Polish:

  • If your favourite nail polish is on its last breath and has gotten so thick you need a spatula to spread it out you can blow a little extra life into it by soaking the applicator brush in acetone and as soon as it’s clean put the brush back int he nail polish bottle and give it a good roll between your hands, the acetone left on the brush is enough to make your polish liquid again and easy to apply.
  • Always roll polish between your hands to mix the formula, shaking it will cause bubbles to form resulting in am uneven result

  1. I never knew this “Don’t paint your nails after you washed your hands, your nails absorb water and your nail polish will chip and peel faster.” Will definitely try it your way.

    1. I can’t remember where I read it but ever since I did I try not to wash my hands before doing my nails unless I still have nail polish on 🙂
